Project highlights

Gauteng Provincial Government, Dinokeng
We conducted a social impact assessment for the proposed Dinokeng Game Reserve within the Dinokeng area. Dinokeng is one of the Blue IQ projects. The study involved primary research within communities to determine the impacts of the proposed game reserve on people that live and work in the area. Grant Thornton was the lead provider with the Community Agency for Social Enquiry (“CASE”) assisting us with the primary research. This study involved several research tools, including questionnaires, focus groups and in-depth interviews. The study culminated in the development of an implementation plan to mitigate the effects of the game reserve on the residents of the area. Rish Hannekom, CEO of Blue IQ Projects: Cradle of Humankind and Dinokeng had the following comments on our draft final reports “We would like to thank you for the effort demonstrated and excellent product from this assignment”.

Department of Health
Together with Prodigy Business Services we conducted extensive research (including 4 500 employee and 400 employer personal interviews, 10 in-depth case studies and 5 consumer focus groups) in the hospitality sector to determine the current knowledge, attitude, practices and behaviour amongst employees towards HIV/AIDS and the impact of the pandemic on the sector. The project culminated in a practical HIV/AIDS management toolkit for the sector.

Inseta
Development of the 2005-2009 Sector Skills Plan (“SSP”) for Inseta. Grant Thornton was the lead consultant in this project and was responsible for overall project management, project design, client liaison, data analysis, strategy development, invoicing, report writing etc. Prodigy Business Services was subcontracted to conduct part of the work, including questionnaire administration and some interviews.

Austrian Trade Commission
Developed a report detailing South Africa’s infrastructure needs leading up to 2010 and beyond. The purpose of this report was to provide Austrian companies with an indication of opportunities available to them in infrastructure projects in South Africa. The findings were presented at a seminar in Austria in 2006.

Tourism BEE Charter Council
Together with Fair Trade in Tourism, Grant Thornton is responsible for undertaking a study on B-BBEE verification systems for the tourism sector. This study includes the development of a toolkit for tourism businesses to help them implement B-BBEE in their organisations. In addition, the team is responsible for aligning the Tourism Charter to the Codes of Good Practice as well as knowledge transfer to the Tourism Charter Council with regard to the Codes of Good Practice and the principles of verification, accreditation and certification.

Pharmateutical Manufacturers Association (PMA)/Innovative Medicines SA (IMSA)
A benchmarking analysis to compare the South African single exit pricing for pharmaceutical products with benchmarked prices in 5 countries (IMSA and PMA) and in 7 countries (PMA only).

LNDC
We conducted a feasibility study for the development of an industrial estate in Maseru, Lesotho. Our study culminated in a bankable feasibility report which is to be used by the Client to obtain funding for the project. The report included various high-road and low-road scenarios based on local economic conditions projected demand for the estate. We included various 20-year scenarios for the phased roll-out of the estate, as well as financial projections for this period.
